The Roadhouse Series Returns with Tom Waits 75th Birthday Tribute
It’s been months since the finale of the Roadhouse Series. When we looked at the calendar and realized in December of 2024, we will be celebrating Tom Waits 75th Birthday, the Better Angels of Americana Music gave us a nudge and said…”LET THERE BE A ROADHOUSE FOR TOM WAITS!” So, who are we to argue?
December 7th has been forever forged on our national consciousness as a ‘Day that will live in infamy.’ But, in 1949, in Taxicab in Pomona, California, Tom Waits came into the world. The day has been redeemed as one of the 21st Century’s great American songwriters was born.
Tom Waits became one of the shadow icons of American music. He broke out during the Singer-Songwriter Movement of the 1970s. At the time of his arrival, the trademark of the music was folk based with such sunshine icons as John Denver, James Taylor and Carole King, On one lightning filled dark night Tom Waits emerged from some inner-city alley just outside a neon lit bar and began to write and sing. He went against the grain of the trend of the sound of the times. His influences were many…..His first albums sounded including Closing Time, and Heart of Saturday Night sounded as if Mose Allison and Blind Willie Johnson had a summit with Charles Bukowski & Jack Kerouac.
The result is a saga of albums and songs that is stirring, haunting, fierce and relentlessly creative in innovation and soul. He remains like no other artist on the American music scene when he started and today.
This show will be a vintage Roadhouse concert with the best musicians in the L.A. basin performing highlights from Tom’s career. Join us for an evening of entertainment as we celebrate Tom Waits in the Basement of the historic Fret House.
