Joel Rafael & Nick Justice in Concert at The Fret House, Saturday, June 22. 8:00 pm

$ 25.00

Returning to the Fret House, Veteran singer-songwriter Joel Rafael brings his unique folk-roots music for an evening of the best in Americana music with his friend and special guest, Nick Justice along with Claremont’s up-and-coming Randy Miller. Rafael & Justice recently completed a successful engagement at The Blue Door in Oklahoma City.
Singer-songwriter and folk musician Joel Rafael is among California’s finest singer-songwriters who has found an international following with his original, country-tinged songs and his love for Woody Guthrie’s legacy. He has been writing and performing for over 50 years, beginning as a drummer with his first band, a jazz combo, in the 6th grade. After transitioning from jazz to surf music in junior high, Rafael soon found himself swept up by the rise of folk music in the early sixties. He began learning chords on a cheap guitar he picked up in Tijuana, until he was able to afford a more respectable instrument by selling an expensive rifle he'd been given. He soon became the resident folk musician of his high school, performing in hootenannies, benefit shows, and on open stages, polishing his style. He began incorporating his lyrics and melodies into the folk format, and by his senior year he was gigging in clubs his classmates were too young to enter.  After a recent tour in Spain and a successful series of engagements in Oklahoma, Rafael is making this rare appearance at the Fret House, not to be missed.

Nick Justice hails from Bronx, NY. He came out west in 1980 and fronted a few bands (Guns for Hire, Nick Justice Band, Chords of Fame) in the emerging cow punk era in southern California. Today, an established singer-songwriter, Nick Justice follows the tradition of the traveling troubadour writing songs about lost souls, broken dreams and the search for redemption. He has five solo records to his credit with his last solo effort Rope the Wind reaching #1 on the Roots Music Report Top 50 Folk Rock Album Chart in 2021. His latest release, Stranger in My Town,  released in 2023 and produced by folk legend Joel Rafael, has found success nationally on the Americana Music Association charts.

Randy Miller is a local favorite singer-songwriter. He has been a regular at Coffee Gallery Backstage appearing in The Roadhouse Series’ tribute to his cousin & friend, Tom Waits.  He has also appeared most recently at The Eclectic: South Pasadena’s Eclectic Music Festival & Arts Crawl.
